Kovalenko Lyudmila Vasilyevna graduated from Karaganda State Medical Institute in 1979, with which the consecutive years of educational and scientific work are associated in the capacity of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, and Head of Pathological Physiology Department. At this time, in the sphere of her scientific interests, the fundamental aspects of the synthesis and secretion of pulmonary tensioactives prevailed, playing a huge role in the first inhale of a newborn and, subsequently, in physiology and pathology of respiration. Priority studies were experimental and clinical evidence of the involvement in the regulation of the biological activity of the alveolar cells of two biochemical pathways – through the activation of cyclic adenosine phosphate and the hydrolysis of membrane polyphosphoinositides. In 1988, she defended her dissertation “State of Surfactant Lung System With Changes in Insulinogenesis” for the degree of Candidate of Sciences (Medicine) and in 1997 ‒ her doctoral dissertation “Surfactant Lung System in Fetus and Newborn in Diabetes Mellitus in Pregnant Women”.
Since 1998, Kovalenko L. V. has been working as a Professor of the Department of Physiology on the course of general and clinical pathophysiology in Surgut State University. In 2008 upon an initiative of Kovalenko L. V. the Department of Pathophysiology and General Pathology had been established, which she has been managing to the present day.
Over the years the scientific and research activities of Kovalenko have made a significant contribution to medical science and national health care. Her name is closely associated with the formation and development of the Medical Institute, which has been participating in the program of academic mobility between the universities of the Russian Federation and CIS countries since 2010. At the initiative and with the participation of Kovalenko L.V. the conferences of various levels are conducted: local, regional, and international. Students and academic personnel, participating in academic mobility programs, get access to more qualitative educational and research programs and return with a bundle of knowledge that promotes the development of new workforce potential able to take its rightful place in healthcare.
The present day Prof. Kovalenko L. V. with the assistance of colleagues contributes to the integration of science, education and production.
By virtue of the initiative, productive work and purposefulness of Lyudmila Vasilyevna the establishment of Medical Institute continues within the development of fundamental and applied scientific researches in the field of healthcare. This brought the Institute to the level of reputable medical universities of the country, near and far abroad.
The main scientific achievements are associated with the study of typical pathological processes in perinatal medicine. He is the scientific director of R&D “Pathophysiological aspects of the protection of fetal development and modern concepts of diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of typical pathological processes of the reproductive system of women at different age periods”. Prof. Kovalenko is the head of the RFBR grant “The influence of genetic polymorphism and endothelium-mediated factors on the formation of severe placental disorders in early and late preeclampsia”.
Prof. Kovalenko supervises the doctoral dissertation council D 800.005.04.
Prof. Kovalenko is the author of more than 350 scientific works, including 3 monographs, 53 publications in journals from the list of Higher Attestation Commission, 2 textbooks on pathophysiology, more than 20 study guides. In 2016, the monograph “Progressing placental insufficiency and fetal pathology. The mechanisms of formation of cardio placental insufficiency during high-risk pregnancy” is published. In 2006, a study “Psychological and Pedagogical Aspects of Protecting the Health of Participants in the Educational Process” was carried out under the grant of the Department of Education and Science of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Ugra, and in 2008 the research “Reproductive Health Care for Children and Adolescents in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Ugra” was carried out under a grant from the Government of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Ugra.
Under the leadership of Kovalenko L. V. 17 dissertations for the degree of Candidate of Sciences (Medicine) and 1 dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Sciences (Medicine) were defended.
In 2008, Kovalenko L. V. founded the scientific and practical journal “Vestnik SurGU. Medicina”, created an editorial board and editorial council.
Prof. Kovalenko is a member of the editorial board of the journal “Vestnik NovSU”(Veliky Novgorod) – a journal from the list of the Higher Attestation Commission.
Prof. Kovalenko is a member of the Board of the All-Russian Scientific Society for Pathophysiology, member of the editorial boards of scientific journals, chairman of the Ugra Association of Medical Education.
For conscientious work, Prof. Kovalenko was awarded diplomas of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, the Okrug Government, the Department of Health, the Department of Education and Youth Policy of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Ugra. In 2004, she was awarded the title “Honorary Worker of Higher Professional Education of the Russian Federation”, in 2016 she was awarded the honorary title “Honored Worker of Health Care of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Ugra”.
